Description
Crete is a large island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, south of mainland Greece. In the Bible, Crete is mentioned a few times. It was home to the Cretans, descendants of the ancient Minoan civilization. In Acts 2:11, Cretans were present at Pentecost in Jerusalem, hearing the apostles speak in their language. Paul also sailed near Crete during his voyage to Rome (Acts 27), where they encountered a storm near Fair Havens and were later shipwrecked. In Titus 1:5, Paul left Titus in Crete to appoint elders and organize the churches. Crete had a reputation for moral corruption (Titus 1:12), but it became an important center for early Christianity. Its strategic location made it a key point for travel and trade in the Roman Empire.
